This role is responsible for documenting, capturing, and managing the technical, licensing, and programmatic requirements and configuration of the system from the highest level to the contract end item level.

  • Determine and manage stakeholder needs and expectations and translate them into technical requirements.
  • Define system architecture and derived requirements to produce a solution that can be implemented to enable a balanced and optimum result that considers all stakeholder requirements.
  • Generate a system solution that meets a set of needs and demonstrates that it is a credible and feasible solution.
  • Direct the development of mechanical/physical concepts, designs and develop process to create structures systems and components (SSCs).
  • Ensure that the lifecycle requirements are addressed at the correct point in the system design, e.g., manufacturability, testability, reliability, maintainability, safety, flexibility, interoperability, disposal, etc.
  • Perform functional analyses to verify that system capabilities meet the requirements.
  • Decompose higher-level functions to lower-levels and ensure traceable allocation of requirements to those functions.
  • Ensure proper component integration into the system as well as integration into the next level assembly.
  • Identify, define, manage, and control all system interfaces across system or system element boundaries.
  • Maintain design integrity by ensuring that the overall coherence and cohesion of the “evolving” design of a system is maintained, in a verifiable manner, throughout the lifecycle, and retains the original intent.
  • Validate the system design by ensuring that the operational capability of the system meets the needs of the customer/user – “did we build the right system?”.
