Position Description:

The I&C Engineer position will support the development of instrumentation and controls (I&C) systems of advanced reactor designs for microreactors and space nuclear applications. This position supports the full development lifecycle from research and development (R&D), analysis, design, build, test, and deployment for one or more aspects of I&C (functional design, system design, hardware, software, modelling, etc.).

Responsibilities:

  • Support and perform I&C design activities for one or more of the following technical areas:
    • Control Systems (Distributed Control Systems (DCS) , Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Plant Control Systems, Process Controls)
    • Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs)
    • Plant Communications (Networking, Cyber Security, Data Monitoring)
    • Information Systems
    • Protection Systems (Reactor Protection Systems, Safety Systems)
    • Digital Twins or Simulators
  • Perform design activities for I&C systems:
    • Design descriptions and technical documentation
    • I&C logic (PLC/FPGA) software development and simulation modeling
    • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)
    • Controls development (PID controls, closed-loop controls, etc.)
    • Input/output (sensor and actuator) definition, location and hardware
  • Perform analysis activities for I&C systems:
    • Reliability analysis
    • Hazards analysis
    • Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA)
  • Support licensing efforts in accordance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) standards
  • Support functional requirement definition and supply chain activities for I&C systems
  • Perform testing and verification and validation (V&V) activities for I&C systems
  • Perform all engineering work within the X-energy quality assurance program
  • Interface with other functional areas and vendors
  • Support and conduct reviews and presentations for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager
 Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electric, Computer, Nuclear, Software, or Mechanical Engineering (or related field) from an ABET accredited university typically five plus years of experience
  • If a Masters degree in Electric, Computer, Nuclear, Software, or Mechanical Engineering (or related field) from an ABET accredited university typically two plus years of experience required
  • If a Ph.D. degree in Electric, Computer, Nuclear, Software, or Mechanical Engineering (or related field) from an ABET accredited university typically zero plus years of experience required
  • Advanced degrees, high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR), and/or commercial light-water reactor (LWR) experience may be acceptable in lieu of years of experience

Work Schedule: Onsite, Hybrid (at least 2 days per week in company office)
Travel Expectations: Remote employees may be required to travel to Rockville as needed

Hours: 8:00am-5:00pm, Mon-Fri
