Position Title: Sr. Hardware Engineer – India

Experience: 8+ years relevant experience with BS EE, or 6+ years with MS EE, or 0-4years with PhD EE

Location: Bengaluru, India

Role Description: NuCurrent is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer with a Hardware focus who is motivated to work closely with a talented and diverse engineering group to drive electrical hardware design, system integration with software and mechanical engineers, and test to deliver end customer products. The candidate will work very closely with electrical hardware, electromagnetics, software, and mechanical engineers to design and bring custom boards up from scratch and take innovative products to market, while exhibiting strong cultural values that put the customer first, go beyond the standard, show strong ownership, innovate further, and show strong people skills.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

  • Lead a team of electrical, mechanical, software, and electromagnetics engineers on the development of wireless power systems and modules for a diversity of applications, from spec development to customer product delivery.
  • Architect, simulate, model, design, and validate wireless power systems and modules for a diversity of applications, including consumer electronics, industrial devices, automotive industry applications, medical applications and other exciting industries.
  • Extensive hands-on design, troubleshooting, optimization, simulation, and modeling will be required.
  • Be the customer-facing technical authority on NuCurrent wireless power technology

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with engineering team to translate product requirements into engineering deliverables
  • Lead the design and development of wireless power systems (including circuit design) for a variety of projects in parallel
  • Devise timelines and work with internal team, partners, and vendors to ensure smooth progress of a project, and adherence to timelines
  • Design will include using simulation tools such as SPICE (or equivalent) for circuits, mathematical analysis using Matlab (or equivalent), and Schematic and PCB layout using Altium.
  • Development will include extensive hands-on testing with RF boards developed either in-house or by partners/customers, using oscilloscopes, VNA’s, and other test equipment
  • Influence company management, partners, and customers to support successful implementation of wireless power into products
  • Contribute to and influence the development of Intellectual Property

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Proven track record of simulation, modeling, design, and hands-on validation of mixed-signal hardware
  • Circuit design and PCB design for EMI/EMC mitigation methods and techniques
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetics and magnetostatics (100 KHz – 100 MHz ideally)
  • Experience with validation of PA’s (1 W to 50 W), tuning/impedance matching circuits, voltage regulators
  • Very strong written & verbal communications skills, and good interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in use of electrical test equipment (i.e. oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, soldering tools, etc.)
  • Demonstrated success in resolution of technical challenges leveraging strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work individually and in small teams that may include contractors working remotely
  • Relentless and enterprising approach to solving problems
  • Ability to multitask and be flexible
  • Passion for developing hardware (boards and/or consumer product), including electrical schematics and PCBs
  • Proficiency in use of SPICE (or equivalent) simulation tools for modeling and evaluating circuit designs

PREFERABLE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

    • PA design experience of high efficiency Class D, E, F amplifiers (ideally in the 1-50Mhz range)
    • DC-DC Converter experience from LF to HF (up to 10MHz preferred)
    • Experience in wireless power applications
    • Experience with NFC technology
    • Strong understanding of Bluetooth and connectivity protocols
    • Antenna/RF simulation, optimization & testing
    • Experience in hardware development for mobile devices with WiFi/GPS/NFC
    • Experience with C programming, and understanding communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART
    • Knowledge of battery charging circuits and batteries

Experience: MS EE with 3+yrs of experience or PhD EE with 0-3yrs industry experience Required

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

  • Design Inductive wireless power coils in the most challenging applications for consumer electronics, medical (implantable devices), industrial, and automotive industries.
  • Responsible for ensuring accurate in-situ modeling of wireless power antenna designs.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of electrical, mechanical, software engineers to produce the most innovative inductive wireless power solutions on the market.
  • Model, measure and select coil materials such as permeable material, coil substrate material, permanent magnet core and coating material, and enclosure adhesives to minimize losses due to proximity effects, skin effects, and fringe effects.
  • Interact with key customers to integrate NuCurrent’s solutions for wireless power.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with engineering team to translate product requirements into engineering deliverables
  • Lead antenna design projects from concept to production, ensuring adherence to industry standards and performance metrics.
  • Work and adhere to project timelines to deliver on-time prototypes, test results, and documentation to customers
  • Development will include extensive hands-on testing by integrating coils with RF boards developed either in-house or by partners/customers measuring key Electro-magnetic parameters with impedance analyzers, Vector-Network Analyzers, Spectrum Analyzer, E-field and H-field probes
  • Develop and evaluate novel and realistic ideas to grow Intellectual Property -> Innovate in the expanding field of Wireless Power
  • Stay abreast of manufacturing techniques and new high-performance cost-competitive technologies applicable to NuCurrent’s antenna structures. Engage with vendors (e.g. PCB and ferrite) to understand their capabilities, limitations and cost drivers
  • Collaborate with academic partners to contribute to our R&D projects aimed at developing differentiated innovative technologies
  • Conduct complete antenna integration process including antenna selection, placement, and in-situ testing
  • Build simulation model templates that correlate accurately with measurements and are readily available for other antenna engineers
  • Translate customer requirements into magnetic parameter constraints for proper coil design and material selection
  • Evaluate coil design as it relates to industry regulatory standards for requirements such as EMI, SAR, Nerve Stimulation, and others

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Familiarity with EM simulation tools such as ANSYS (HFSS and Maxwell), CST, JMAG, or equivalent EM tools
  • Excellent written & verbal communications skills, good interpersonal skills, and comfortable talking in front of management, key partners, and key customers
  • Ability to understand electrical hardware schematics and PCB layout
  • Ability to work individually and in small teams
  • Very comfortable with hands-on lab testing (applications related to wireless power, RFID, NFC a bonus)
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetics and magnetostatics (100 KHz – 100 MHz ideally)

PREFERABLE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Experience with electric motor and/or electric machine design
  • Experience in wireless power applications, knowledge of inductive coupling systems, RF antenna design
  • Knowledge in modeling magnetic and conductive materials within magnetic coupling systems on EM software and assessing their impact on performance
  • Knowledge of thermal management materials and experience in designing for thermal management
  • Experience with Altium
