Mechanical Engineering Intern

At Axoft

Cambridge, Massachusetts

Axoft is building the most advanced and scalable platform for implantable brain-machine interfaces. Our mission is to enable minimally invasive, long-term stable and ultra-high bandwidth communication with the brain, opening new therapies and treatments against neurological disorders and physical disabilities. We have bridged the gap between electronic and biological materials to create the softest, nanofabricated brain implants in the world. We are now looking to add talented people to the team who are passionate, deliver results, and are committed to finding creative solutions to complex problems. Axoft is looking for candidates who have demonstrated exceptional abilities and results in their previous professional, academic and interpersonal experiences and have the skillset that fits this job offer.

About the Role:

We are looking for a mechanical engineering intern with a strong foundation in mechanical CAD and fabrication (3D printing, machining, laser cutting etc.) to assist with preclinical and clinical device development at Axoft. The role focuses on designing and providing mechanical designs and parts to assist with manufacturing, assembly, device preparation, and implantation of Axoft’s novel brain-computer interface devices.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Research and Development:

Utilize CAD software (OnShape), 3D printing (FDM and SLA, optionally other methods), and machining (CNC, laser cutting, optionally other methods) to design components, parts and assemblies that assist with the standard life cycle of Axoft devices all the way from the early wafer fabrication stage to preparation in the surgery room.

Collaboration:

Collaborate with microfabrication, preclinical, electrical and product development teams to develop fixtures and device components as needed to assist with development.

Effectively communicate with these teams to iterate on the design and arrive at the optimal solution.

Regularly execute part, sub-assembly, assembly and drawing release to comply with Axoft’s policies on CAD review.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be in a graduate program (Master’s or PhD) with a focus in mechanical engineering. Other disciplines will be considered if their work has had a strong focus on mechanical design and manufacturing.

High proficiency with CAD software, such as OnShape.

High proficiency with physical part manufacturing, such as 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC.

Capable of establishing clarity and prioritizing effectively in research settings with inherent uncertainties.

Knowledge of design for manufacturing (DFM) principles.

Well organized and a self-starter who is able to manage small project independently.

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

Previous experience in leading academic or commercial research projects where mechanical design, fabrication and iteration based on design requirement was involved.

Experience with design for manufacturing (DFM).
