DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support production operations on full scale welded assemblies, providing direction to manufacturing engineers and welders on correct techniques in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Advise, guide, and provide consultation on Axiom Space welding requirements for a variety of welding processes, including materials selection, process control, and weld qualification.
  • Support of welding-related Material & Processes group activities including written documentation, drawings review, review of vendor documentation, vendor onsite inspections, materials assessments, flight certifications, and related duties.
  • Review of design, engineering drawings, and project documentation to ensure that welding requirements are met.
  • Other duties as required.

Education & Experience

  • BS in Welding Engineering or related technical discipline and 8-9 years of experience or
  • MS in Welding Engineering or related technical discipline and 6-7 years of experience or
  • PhD PhD in Welding Engineering or related technical discipline and 2-3 years of experience in welding engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required

  • Demonstrable mastery of welding engineering, commensurate with experience level
  • Experience working to AWS welding specifications, codes, and standards
  • Tooling design experience for welded assemblies to reduce part distortion and improve part consistency
  • Fundamental knowledge of welding processes across a variety of material systems, including knowledge of: base material and welding material selection; cutting, polishing, and etching weld test samples; tooling and fixturing designs required for weld operation
  • Experience with multiple welding processes in the following: gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), plasma arc welding (PAW), flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), friction stir welding (FSW), resistance welding, orbital tube welding, electron beam welding (EBW), and laser beam welding (LBW)
  • Experience developing weld processes and parameters including: welding qualification test campaigns, welding procedure specifications, procedure qualification records, mechanical testing, and NDE
  • Self-motivated with meticulous attention to detail and strong analytical ability, organizational skills, and command of oral and written communication

Preferred

  • Experience working to NASA standards in human-rated spaceflight hardware
  • Experience supporting design and manufacturing teams in an aerospace environment
  • Experience working with Ni-based Alloys, Cu-based Alloys, and/or other aerospace materials
  • Experience in hardware manufacturing processes such as castings, forgings, additively manufactured components, machining, leak testing, and final acceptance testing of integrated hardware
  • Experience with root cause analysis and corrective actions including, but not limited to, optical and SEM fractography/metallography, hardness, chemical analysis, and mechanical testing

Essential Functions

Work Environment: Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.

Requirements

  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Management has the prerogative to select at any level for which the position is advertised.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.

Physical Requirements

  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time).
